2. Paleoseismological studies

2.1. The Feldbiss Fault in Belgium

2.1.7. Upcoming investigations

The purpose of the Royal Observatory of Belgium is to complete a consistent paleoseismological analysis all along the Bree fault scarp. Particularly, we hope to establish a late Pleistocene to Holocene chronology of surface rupturing earthquakes, in order to better define the seismic hazard in this region. To that end, additional sites will be investigated further south-east along the escarpment, both geophysically and in trenches. During the field season of 1998 a new trench will be excavated, either in Meeuwen or in Neeroeteren. In addition, geomorphological and geophysical investigations will be carried out along one of the north-western branches of the Feldbiss Fault, most probably the Reppel Fault, and, if time permits, an extra trench excavated.
