So far three sites along the Bree fault escarpment were selected for further paleoseismological research: two closely spaced sites (sites 1 and 2) slightly south of the town centre of Bree in 1996, and a third site 1.5 km to the SE, near Opitter, in 1997. Their location is indicated in Fig. 3.

Sites 1 and 2 are located in the axis and on the shoulder, respectively, of a small river valley incising the Bree fault scarp near its north-western limit. Though only 200 m distant, the two sites are very different: site 1 is characterised by a gentle overall slope, punctuated by a pronounced frontal scarp near the base of the slope, whereas site 2 shows a much steeper topography, with a less distinct frontal escarpment near the top of the slope (see Fig. 5).
Site 3 is located on the flank of a small abandoned valley and its topography is similar to that of site 2.
