2. Paleoseismological studies
2.1. The Feldbiss Fault in Belgium
2.1.3. Site Selection
So far three sites along the Bree fault
escarpment were selected for further
paleoseismological research: two closely spaced
sites (sites 1 and 2) slightly south of the town
centre of Bree in 1996, and a third site 1.5 km
to the SE, near Opitter, in 1997. Their location
is indicated in Fig. 3.
Sites 1 and 2 are located in the axis and on
the shoulder, respectively, of a small river
valley incising the Bree fault scarp near its
north-western limit. Though only 200 m distant,
the two sites are very different: site 1 is
characterised by a gentle overall slope,
punctuated by a pronounced frontal scarp near the
base of the slope, whereas site 2 shows a much
steeper topography, with a less distinct frontal
escarpment near the top of the slope (see Fig.
5).
Site 3 is located on the flank of a small
abandoned valley and its topography is similar to
that of site 2.
